What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient, non-intrusive complementary therapy. A hands-on healing technique, Reiki enhances the body's own innate ability to heal itself on all levels.

It helps restore balance and harmony to the mind, body and spirit. The energy involved in Reiki healing is the universal energy that surrounds all life. Reiki is used throughout the world by people of all creeds and belief systems. Reiki can benefit everyone. The two ways to experience Reiki energy are to have a Reiki treatment from a Reiki practitioner or to learn how to use it for yourself,  by attending a Reiki Course.

Everyone has the ability to use Reiki, most adults have closed off to the energy they were naturally channelling as children. Years of conditioning and the general ups and downs of life contribute to this.

How Reiki works?

We all have an energy field (aura) surrounding our physical body. As we go through life we place demands on our energy field. During a Reiki treatment this energy field can re-energise. Reiki restores the natural balance of the body, providing deep relaxation and bringing a sense of peace and well-being. It is called universal life energy because it draws upon the healing energy of the universe rather than the energy of the practitioner. The Reiki practitioner has been professionally trained to channel the Reiki energy.

Reiki can be of great benefit for a broad range of conditions. It is used as a compliment to conventional therapies. Some people who have migraine, asthma, skin conditions, ulcers, orthopedic injuries and arthritis have noted improvements in their health. Reiki has also supported some people who have various forms of cancer and other types of serious health conditions. The gentle Reiki energy is also effective in calming the mind and has helped many with anxiety and depression. Reiki is a great support in helping people deal with normal day to day issues in a relaxed way. People may find that after Reiki they cope better with life issues and their energy is not depleted along the way. People with low self-esteem and poor self-confidence levels may have also noted remarkable differences following treatments. Reiki is something that pregnant woman can use and can be a great support during child birth. Some maternity hospitals now offer Reiki as a complementary form of therapy.

Prenatal/Pregnancy Massage

Benefits Of Prenatal/Pregnancy Massage

Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labour outcomes and new born  health. Massage therapy addresses different needs through varying techniques, one of which is called Holistic Massage.

Pregnancy Massage

Holistic Massage aims to relax muscle tension and improve lymphatic and blood circulation through mild pressure applied to the muscle groups of the body. Holistic Massage is the recommended massage method during pregnancy because it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts.

Hormone regulation

Studies done in the past 10 years have shown that hormone levels associated with relaxation and stress are significantly altered when massage therapy is introduced to women’s prenatal care. This leads to mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health.

In women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol (hormones associated with stress) were reduced, and dopamine and serotonin levels were increased (low levels of these hormones are associated with depression).

These changes in hormone levels also led to fewer complications during birth and fewer instances of new born complications, such as low birth weight. The evidence strongly suggests there are maternal and new born health benefits when therapeutic massage is incorporated into regular prenatal care.

Reduction of swelling

Oedema, or swelling of the joints during pregnancy, is often caused by reduced circulation and increased pressure on the major blood vessels by the heavy uterus. Massage helps to stimulate soft tissues to reduce collection of fluids in swollen joints. This also improves the removal of tissue waste carried by the body’s lymph system.

Improvement of nerve pain

Sciatic nerve pain is experienced by many women in late pregnancy as the uterus rests on muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back. The pressure of the uterus spreads tension to the muscles of the upper and lower leg, causing them to swell and put pressure on nearby nerves.

Massage therapy addresses the inflamed nerves by helping to release the tension on nearby muscles. Many women have experienced a significant reduction in sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy through massage.

Other potential benefits of prenatal massage:

  • Reduced back pain
  • Reduced joint pain
  • Improved circulation
  • Reduced oedema
  • Reduced muscle tension and headaches
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles
  • Better sleep

Precautions For Prenatal Massage?

As with any therapeutic approach to pregnancy wellness, women should discuss massage with their prenatal care provider. An initial consultation prior to treatment will take place to rule out any contraindications and to ensure that this massage is suitable for you.

Women who have recently experienced bleeding, pre-term contractions, or have any of the following conditions should speak with a health care provider prior to receiving a massage:

  • High risk pregnancy
  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH)
  • Preeclampsia
  • Previous pre-term labor
  • Experiencing severe swelling, high blood pressure, or sudden, severe headaches

Holistic Massage

Holistic Massage therapy is one of the oldest methods of healthcare in practice today. It involves use of different manipulative techniques to move the body's muscles and soft tissue. Massage therapy aims to improve blood circulation, increasing the flow of nutrients and eliminating waste products to name but a few.

Massage is the recent name for the ancient-established art of healing by touch. Massage is calming and soothing. It improves our sense of well-being, and reduces the levels of cortisol - the body’s stress hormone. It also strengthens the immune system by bringing more white blood cells into the circulation system, and this in turn helps to fight infection.

Holistic Massage

It also improves joint mobility, releases muscle tension, helps eliminate toxins and assists in tension release. Massage can reduce your heart rate, relax your muscles, improve range of motion in your joints and increase production of your body's natural pain killers. It helps relieve stress and anxiety.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles. It is used for chronic aches and pain and contracted areas such as a stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.

Deep Tissue Massage

Some of the strokes are the same as those used in classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles).

How Does It Work?

With chronic muscle tension or injury, there may be adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can disrupt circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist uses massage oil and often uses direct deep pressure. Muscles must be relaxed in order for the therapist to reach the deeper musculature.

Does Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?

At certain points during the massage, most people find there is usually some discomfort and pain.

It is important to tell the massage therapist when things hurt and if any soreness or pain you experience is outside your comfort range. There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so.

 Cancer Care Massage

Oncology Massage is a specially designed combination of various therapies specifically designed for people living with cancer. Cancer patients may experience feelings of isolation, fear, anxiety and worry which can be alleviated and/or assisted through a medium of touch. Massage can help ease the stress experienced by cancer patients.

Cancer Care Massage

Reduced stress levels have been shown to be beneficial for the immune system so a properly performed oncology massage can be extremely beneficial for the patient to strengthen his/her body. Scientific studies show that cancer patients receiving massage have lower anxiety scores. Patients report the release of muscle tension can lead to pain relief. Feelings of deep relaxation and wholeness are most commonly reported.

Pressure is very gentle because the skin is very often compromised during chemo/radiation treatments. The position for massage will be modified to suit the client.

The Irish Cancer Society endorses complimentary therapies such as oncology massage, reflexology, meditation & visualisation. Some hospitals offer these treatments to cancer patients.

Those who can receive Oncology Massage are;

  • Patients in receipt of Chemotherapy & Radiation Treatments.
  • Pre & Post-Surgical Cancer (as advised by doc)
